3 Reasons to Watch The Science of Sleep from MasterClass

Matthew Walker has published more than 100 scientific research studies examining sleep. As one of most notable authorities on the subject it's not surprising that MasterClass tapped into his knowledge. You can see a preview and my review of the full course below.

The Review in Short:

I was a little skeptical of the depth this program would explore.  Would it be more information than I had already gleaned from reading many articles throughout the years?  The short answer is yes.

Top 3 Reasons to Watch Matthew Walker's The Science of Sleep on MasterClass:

1. Matthew Walker provides a reasonable approach for incorporating caffeine, alcohol and schedules into your life.

While it's great to know that these affect your sleep, many people don't know what to do with the information.  So having Matthew provide tips creates a framework of action.

2. Walker's approach to sleep comes from a place of empathy, something we can all use a bit more of in life.

He explores night owls and morning people, and how they are evolutionarily predisposed to a certain schedule. This schedule changes throughout their lifetime. He gently suggests that you should be nicer to your children who may tend to wake late in their teenage years. He even adjusted schedules for his employees that perform better outside the standard 9-5 work hours, something I wish more employers (and maybe even schools?) would accommodate.

3. There is a narrative on how to proactively prevent future disease and mental illness.

Intuitively I think we all know sleep is important and impacts behavior.  But Walker delves deeper into a scientific study he's currently performing.  The hypothesis is that you could prevent or delay the effects of diseases such as Alzheimer's by improving your sleep in mid life. How cool is that?
